SPECIALISED FOLDING TECHNOLOGY FOR PHARMACEUTICAL LEAFLETS: H+H KL112.1 INSTALLED AT OPATISK

SPECIALISED FOLDING TECHNOLOGY FOR PHARMACEUTICAL LEAFLETS: H+H KL112.1 INSTALLED AT OPATISK

Formica CZ has completed the installation of a new Herzog+Heymann KL112.1 miniature folding machine at OPATISK in Opava. The specially configured system is designed for the production of complex pharmaceutical package inserts and patient information leaflets made from lightweight paper starting at 35 g/m².

The installation represents the first H+H system at OPATISK and provides the company with dedicated technology for the precise and reliable production of highly complex folded products in very small final formats.

A specialist in folded package inserts

For 35 years, OPATISK has specialised in the production of folded package inserts and information leaflets for the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, food supplement and hygiene industries. In these sectors, accuracy, repeatability and reliable processing are essential.

The company produces several types of folded products, including Inserts, Outserts and Twinsert/PiggyBack solutions. Depending on the selected folding pattern and material, the finished product can contain up to 350 panels and reach a final format as small as 30 × 30 mm.

Producing such applications requires much more than conventional paper folding. Lightweight paper must pass through the entire process smoothly and accurately, while individual folds must remain precisely positioned even in highly complex folding patterns.

The newly installed Herzog+Heymann KL112.1 is not a standard folding machine. It is a specially designed configuration adapted to OPATISK’s production requirements.

The system includes:

  • 12 buckle plates,
  • a cross-fold buckle module,
  • a cross-fold knife module,
  • a water scoring unit,
  • camera-based inspection.

This combination enables the production of complex pharmaceutical leaflets requiring multiple parallel and cross folds. The individual modules make it possible to gradually reduce larger printed sheets into extremely compact final products while maintaining precise fold positioning.

The water scoring unit moistens the defined fold line before folding. This supports reliable processing of lightweight paper and helps achieve a clean, accurate fold. The integrated camera inspection system monitors the production process and provides an additional level of control for applications where consistency and precision are particularly important.

Designed for miniature and complex folds

The H+H KL112.1 is specifically designed for small and miniature folded products, special folding patterns and the multiple folding of lightweight papers. Its folding rollers have a diameter of only 26 mm, enabling a minimum fold length of 18 mm.

Depending on its configuration, the KL112.1 can accommodate up to 24 buckle plates. The production speed of the machine ranges from 30 to 160 metres per minute, although the actual performance always depends on the paper, format and complexity of the particular job.

These characteristics make the KL112.1 particularly suitable for the production of pharmaceutical and cosmetics leaflets, where a large amount of information must be fitted into the smallest possible final format.

Precision at every stage of production

The pharmaceutical sector places exceptionally high demands on the quality and reliability of printed materials. Package inserts must be folded precisely, remain easy to handle and meet the required final dimensions. At the same time, production must be efficient and repeatable even when processing very thin paper.

The new H+H technology provides OPATISK with a specialised solution developed specifically for these demanding applications. It combines flexible folding options, precise paper processing and continuous camera-based inspection.

The first H+H system at OPATISK

This installation marks the beginning of OPATISK’s cooperation with Herzog+Heymann technology. We are delighted that Formica CZ was able to supply and install the first H+H system at the company and to contribute another specialised solution to its production facilities.

The installation demonstrates how a carefully selected machine and a configuration tailored to the customer’s actual requirements can improve production reliability and create the right technological foundation for highly specialised applications.
